Daniel Coulet portrait

D

aniel Coulet’s work invites verticality in both his canvases and in his sculptures, where gaze and thought are forced to rise. The figures or forms born there are “in tension”, in a moving balance, and they force viewers to become aware of their own instability and ambivalence. Between earth and air, between the animal and vegetable kingdoms, they are deeply present, the question of their origin hanging unresolved. Even as we undoubtably sense the heritage of scholastic thought and the longing for light, they persist in connecting us to the “materia prima” of the soil. It is not without effort or difficulty that they represent the fragility of humanity’s ability to conceive of its uprooting from gravity.

There is no assumption in this work, but rather the complex interweaving of matter and spirit. Born in 1954, the artist has shown his tenacious work, built by constantly crossing the thresholds of tradition and his century, in many galleries and national and international museums. Pasolini wrote, “…only tradition is revolutionary.” Daniel Coulet has adopted the poet’s phrase through the mastered practice of an art that leads us to the boundary’s edge, urging us to take “the step beyond” and transform our gaze through the play on values, continuities, shifts, ruptures, and variations…

Born in 1954 in Montpellier, France, lives in Paris.
